Plenty of people here leave the car near a landing and cross to Midtown by boat, while others climb Route 5 and take Palisade Avenue north toward the bridge approach. Either way the car sits outside more than it moves, and salt spray off the river works on the trim and the edge of the glass. Getting around Edgewater is simple until it is not. River Road is the only continuous route through the borough, so a stalled box truck near the shopping centers backs traffic up for a mile. Route 5 and Gorge Road are the two ways up the cliff, both of them steep and curved, and both of them where you notice a crack sitting in your sightline. Parking splits between big surface lots at the retail centers, structured decks under the condo towers, and a handful of tight residential streets. The Mitsuwa lot and the waterfront centers fill on weekends. Two things chew up glass down here. The first is the truck traffic on River Road, where construction and grocery deliveries run all day and loose stone comes off tailgates at every light. The second is the river itself. Wind funnels between the buildings and the cliff, road salt turns into a fine spray in winter, and that mix collects along the top edge of a windshield and around the molding. Salt does not crack glass on its own, but it settles into a chip and keeps it from ever repairing cleanly. Add the climbs. A car that has been sitting cold in an open deck space and then takes the Route 5 grade with the heat on full is exactly the situation where a small star turns into a running crack.
From River Road, take Route 5 up the hill or wind up Gorge Road, and 137 Palisade Avenue is a few blocks over once you reach the top. From the north end of the borough the climb through the ridge streets is shorter than it looks on a map. Figure under ten minutes when the road is moving.
